Today, packed a suitcase full of objects and rushed them into setups at the studio for my paintings, new ones and some from the last White Whale show. Here are some sneak peeks, I’m sure you’ve already seen these here before, but in other environments. Given my affection for antique stores and the like I thought I might attempt to style just such a background for these little ones. Still not quite happy with the lighting. . .

You’ll see these come up in the shop over the next few days. . .

For love

So of course the week after we go crazy preparing for the White Whale show I have a wedding to arrange flowers for. Have I ever posted any of my arrangements? I’m cutting back on my flower arranging, I can’t quite handle everything on my plate, though I love it all, family, art, flowers. . . art and family won. It is sooooooo much work, but the flowers are amazing. Look at them, perfection with a stem. Magenta peonies, good pick bride, the prettiest bouquet flower ever. Thank you mother, and Erin, and Julia for all your help.

By the way, the Art Bomb show was great, I am invigorated to work. Yes, I should have taken pictures, I brought my camera, but it rode in the stroller. I couldn’t put my eye behind a lens and keep track of Marshall  at the same time. . .

Ok, I going on vacation this week. . . you may or may not see anything new for a while. . . at least for a week.

I know that I may have promised certain people more owls for the WW May show. . . but the proliferation of botanical specimens in my yard distracted me. More owls for the fall show and Indie Craft Parade, thats a promise.

This newly finished one, Luna, Mystery Weed and tribute to the Schiele Girl in the Striped Dress? Ok, so maybe that’s not the real title, I hate picking titles. I’ll just say that this is another milestone for me, a return to my former true art self. (weeeeeirdo. . .) What I mean is, I realized, that as I was finishing this one that it looked so much like my oil work in college ( I had been oil painting at least six years by then, I’ve been in acrylic about five now). The thick loose brushieness over glazes. And the color palette (yes, the obsession again) I can’t tell you how familiar it feels, I think perhaps these colors were in nearly every painting I produced from that time period, tubes and tubes or cerulean and the siennas. And I don’t mind actually. I guess returning to old techniques can be a good thing sometimes. We’ll see what the public thinks about it.

Below, another painting of the mystery weed, and a thank you to Paul Flint for tipping me off about this gray/blue paint was in the oops stack at paint store. A gallon of it for pocket change, yay.

Buy Bike Snob here plz

Behold, the time is nigh!  The Bike Snob book will be out any day now!

I feel so thankful and happy to have my work be a part of the Bike Snob’s new book.  A big thank you, first off, to the Snob for being the Snob, and for writing such a hilariously perceptive book about the wonderful world of cycling (and beyond).  And many thanks to Chronicle Books for asking me to illustrate it!  I honestly could not be more happy with how the whole book turned out.  I was especially excited about doing lots of hand-lettering, including a hand-lettered typeface for the cover title and other headings throughout the book.  The art direction of Brooke Johnson at Chronicle and the design and layout work of Gregory Klein were an absolute pleasure to work with, and I’m just so thrilled with the final product (gah, it’s a golden hardcover!!!)  Cheers all around!

It’s funny… for the first time, seeing all this on the blog, that silky golden-tan color for the book (nice pick, Greg) matches perfectly with our blog… ha!  I didn’t plan that, I promise.

And, to celebrate the release of Bike Snob, we’re doing a promo sale at the Sweet Ride shop!

Just mention “Bike Snob” at checkout, and you’ll receive 15% OFF your order! (Discount will be refunded through PayPal after you place your order.)  Promo runs through May 31.

So GO BUY THE BOOK for you and a bike-loving someone you love (if you pre-order now you’ll get 20% OFF + FREE SHIPPING!) and visit the Sweet Ride shop for more bikey art!

Here are a few of my favorite illustrations from Bike Snob (there are about two dozen in the book).  Enjoy!

I sat back and pondered today, in retrospect I think it might have been an obsession, my search for a color palette I could confidently wield. The three giant binders filled with magazine clippings, the screen captures and files saved in folders, the dates I spent with Egon Schiele, Leonard and Mauricio, counting the colors in the stripey gowns (or lack there of ), the feathers in the headresses. Its true I never felt very comfortable with my color choices, they didn’t fit, I think it was the paint. I never had that problem with oil. No, it was me, I just didn’t know what I was doing. Now I just choose what I really want to see hanging on my wall.

I like these. I like the colors. They are so small and frivolous really, the only thing I can manage to slip into my short free times (toddler naps). But, I think they are a good predictor of getting somewhere worth going.  And I’m loosing up! Another good thing, I also never had that problem with oil. But I thinned the latex paint and now the visible strokes are flowing and not sticky looking. I like how they seem more impulsive. And I like Sterling Hundley, how he makes white shine on the sandy undertones (”pretty”, no 1 in case your interested, I can’t link directly to my example). Thank you reader, for reading this if you did, I know its very self-absorbed for me to say all this.

Oh yes, they will be done for the White Whale May show.

These probably won’t be done by the White Whale May show. . . but eventually they’ll end up in the fall show and in this Greenville craft/art fair. One of our Koelle collections are antique photos, I love the portraits, maybe I actually love the candids more, but I still love the portraits. I like the couples you see framed side by side in ovals. . . so you will be seeing some owls, small ones, and small falcons peering at you from these frames. Maybe they will be couples, not all owls are monogamous.

Speaking of little frames, flip through the sooooo many pages of Lonny, online mag, and get inspired by the many collections of random art arrangements and prepare to buy one of my paintings so you can have your very own random art arrangement.

Scott Tuma’s Dandelion RELEASED!

Scott Tuma’s new record, Dandelion, released on 12″ vinyl from the fine folks at Digitalis, is now available at Digitalis and Boomkat!!! Oh happy day, a dream come true!

About 5 or 6 years ago in college, one of my art instructors handed me a CD with a fish on the cover (no cover title) and said I might like it.  Upon first listen, I realized I had been given something utterly unique and special.  The CD was The River 1 2 3 4 by Scott Tuma, and consisted of four untitled tracks, and it was unlike anything I had ever listened to.  Since then, I’ve been soaking in those very same sounds, listening late at night, early in the morning, any time and all the time.  I’ve listened to The River at least a thousand times, and to this day, when listening, I still don’t even know which track it’s on.  And it doesn’t matter, because any given moment of the music is completely captivating, and that’s all that matters.  Same goes for all of Tuma’s other releases, including his work with Boxhead Ensemble and beyond.  Scott is a true musical master, a conjurer of sepia-toned worlds of dust and sun, of warmth and heartache, of creaking floorboards and slow-motion rivers.

Long story short, I eventually got in touch with Scott to let him know how much I appreciated his work, and the rest is history!

A huge thank you goes out to Scott for making his beautiful, inspiring, timeless music that has filled my home and studio for the past 5 years, and to Brad at Digitalis for being awesome and letting me go to town with the artwork.  When we all meet up in Chicago one of these days, I’m buying the drinks!
