Stayed up late and watched LOST with the Greenes. Inevitably I woke up with a headache (I’m a wuss, I have to got to bed by 11 or my body mutinies). Lots of cups of caffeine later, a hot shower and magical blue pills and I am cured. And the day so bright and warmish! That helps.

My foresty yard has a bounty of fungus every fall, so many varieties, I really need to get a field guide. . . though I don’t eat them, only in select circumstances that involve lots of cheese. These are reference photos I used for my Alice piece. I loved seeing them again and drawing all those subtleties  in their skin. I think I need to draw them more often. . .

Scrambling to finish this painting to send to Gallery Nucleus for the Curious and Curiouser show. . .must be done by the end of the week! Still needs some more graphite and then some glazes. I have twenty-two pieces in the works at various stages of completion. . .that’s better than last week, it was up to twenty-four on Thursday!

I’m sure it will in no way compare to Sir John Tenniel’s fabulous original pieces for the stories.

Watching Hope for Haiti as I type this out and send it to post in the future, so so hard to see those babies alone. I wonder if I should change the channel when seeing them doesn’t allow me to hold them, only makes me terribly sad.

I have strayed far from colors lately. I suppose its my devoted affection for graphite, gray is my comfort zone, art and clothes (sans neon nails and lips). I confess I really have never been satisfied with my color choices in the past, I feel like someone else chose them, not me. I am ready to try again though. Since having a child somehow I am certain of so much more now, the clothes that I like, the decor that I like, the art that I like, the food and I think maybe the colors. . . See the paint palette? Crayola! I got one for Marsh (which is now a collection of muddied ovals) and I couldn’t believe how wonderful the colors were. The watercolor palettes I remember as a child were so chalky. Oh its so fun! the blue! the red! the yellow!

The pine again

For now these two branches wait until studio wednesday, they will get many thin coats of wax then. And the chickadees will get little garlands. And a sprawling mismatched set of little frames will get more paint. And I just now returned from breaking up a screaming cat fight. Literally.

Today was free of distraction, the little boy was in his glory at his beloved aunt and uncle’s house having more fun than I could provide in a month of Saturday. I worked with Chris at the chilly studio, glazed chickadees in shades of gray-green, coated a family of little frames in thick pale peach and tan paint and now I sit at home scratching out many long lines. I love the way pine looks drawn out, but holy cow, it is mind boggling to accomplish. These will be a background for an two encaustic pieces, that need to be done by the end of the month and I have no idea what I am doing. But I think I’m going to like it. And I know that I like this giant aquamarine vase that is holding my pine, given to me by Erin, the beloved aunt I spoke of.

Two other things I like. . . this contest that is an old tradition, face pulling! so delightfully funny and the ridiculous beard and mustache contests, how do you go about kissing one of these gentlemen?

A few weeks ago I found this shrug on Wool and the Gang, in their online kit shop. I love the texture, and the design but honestly I’m not really into the idea of buying the kit. . . also, confession, I don’t really enjoy knitting. Its hard for me to keep count and harder to fix mistakes, actually let’s talk about why I like crocheting much better. . .only one tool to keep track of, only one loop to keep on it, and its so easy to invent things and uninvent them if need be. I found a tutorial on the loop knitting stitch, and then found yay! a crochet one. Here is the video I watched, I paused it alot. And watched it at least six times. But they only show you one row. All the loops are formed on the back, and when you turn it, well, the same stitch doesn’t quite work right. And single crocheting the next row doesn’t let the loops get as dense as I hoped. So I experimented quite alot and finally discovered that when the second row comes around you have to go down into the stitch and out the front (instead of under the stitch from the front, catching the loop on the back) and then catch the loop the same as the video shows you. I’m not sure if I like it that loopy, but that can be fixed. Think of the possibilities! A furry pillow, a cowl, a shaggy purse, a fluffy owl, and maybe soon, a tea cozy. That should keep my tea warm for a while!

To the hilt Part 1

I think my Christmas style might be categorized as “great-grandma’s estate sale”. . . which sounds kind of ridiculous, actually. I think I just really like Christmas to feel nostalgic and old-timey. This year it was old-timey and toddler proof. Unbreakable pompoms, all wooden ornaments (they are the best) collected from various thriftstores across the country, and the tree is wired to a wall mounted book shelf. It wish it was real, I do, even though the fake ones are a bit easier. We had a lot of tree farms in the area that I grew up in. Every year we trudged through some dense pine forest, through snow, I love snow, and bickered continually about the qualifications for best tree. The cold never affected our opinions. Then dad would start hacking away at the compromise and a jump-suited man would appear out of the distance to drag the victim back to the car. Driving home was the most terrifying part, it seemed so possible that the wind really could rip it off the car.  This one is pre-lit, three feet tall and perfectly tacky, it was our first tree, I still remember picking it out and paying for it with tip money. (most likely)

A must see blog this Christmas. Oh yes, and this one. heeheehee, go on, click the link, you have to.

Rearranged the entire gallery at White Whale today (all day) with Sarah and Caroline. . . it looks good! Tomorrow is the big night, I am so not ready! These evergreen ornaments are so ready though, I drew them over Thanksgiving, and then strung them with strings and scattered silver pieces over them via brush, paint and scotch tape (yes, scotch tape) stencils. I love them! I hope other people will. . .

Just in time for metallic inspiration. . . I know its just an UO catalog, but I really love this one, I love the blingy party duds, yes I said blingy party duds. They are PartyParty by Confettisystem. . . I remember seeing some small photos of a fabulous silver pinata in Domino (sigh). So finally, some full full page spreads for oogling.
