Away from my love for Thanksgiving. A thanksgiving valentine for you dear. Found just a few red leaves on the ground, but couldn’t find the tree they fell from.
Missed Chris all the way to Ohio, through turkey and the hit of the dinner, roasted carrots and brussel sprouts (seriously, we all had piles on our plates that disappeared in minutes). Marsh had fun with Poppy and Noni, sisters pillaged thriftstores and antique shops where I found good old books, a dish I must have drawn on, little gold frames to fill with doodles, a funny bird pitcher accused of being phallic and glittering things for my fingers and neck.
Cut my hair like hers! (mine doesn’t look as good) she is so cute!and the shop! Thanks Mollie for the idea. . .
Show at the end of the week. . . so much to do!!!!!!!

I think I’m going to like 26, it is a nice number. . . not sure about 27, so close to 30.
Erin, my sister master of the oven, whipped out a lovely lemon pound cake with loads of swirly frosting and lemon curd. And butter, two pounds she says. The amazing ancient red lacquer box is a present (where is Antiques Road show when you need them) and I need to take a photo of the gorgeous golden velvet pin Julia sewed for me, and the shining turquoise vase that has a new home on a high shelf. The toddler is cozy asleep and I need to clean the bathroom.

Annie and I are really happy to be a part of Poppytalk’s Holiday Market, starting today! Check out our Koelle Art Shop table here. And the Sweet Ride table here! The marketplace runs through December 18th, and with so many beautiful things together all in one place, it’s quite literally a one-stop shop to find awesomely unique gifts for every single person on your shopping list this year. Seriously, it’s almost unhealthy how much time (and money) you can potentially spend looking through all of the stuff from all the wonderful vendors. Just try to keep it together, okay?
I’m also happy to have these Christmas cards available that I designed a while back at Portland Studios. It’s one of my favorite little pieces I’ve ever done. I just had such a fun time researching and doing the drawings. It’s my little take on the lyrics of the song we all know so well, The Twelve Days of Christmas. Whether it’s historically accurate or not, I love the traditional symbolism of the gifts, and really enjoyed making the art.
Go ahead and have your own little research time and google the lyrics and symbolism, if you’re so inclined. It’s fun. Quantities are very limited, so pick up a 12-pack at the Etsy shop before they’re all gone!

My long time friend Annalisa and I are having a show here in March. We needed some reference photos.
Today we were crazy and brave, we took two babies in the rain to the spectacular Carl Sandburg Home in Flat Rock, NC. It was terrible and beautiful, wet muddy children in cold rain and a landscape so deep and green it could make a poet out of anyone. (even a frustrated mother?)
Gentle, sweet goats. . . bright yellow gingo leaves scattered under thick bamboo. . . wet pines by a dark lake. . .
Mud puddles, goat poop and toddlers don’t mix well with camera’s, I didn’t get many good photos, but we did get a little goat!

Marshall took a long nap after visiting this colorful household. . . and I pushed coasts of creamy white paint around my drawings. I love the dry powdery feel of the paint and the slight shadows of the strokes. These will not be shiny, they have many coats of fixative on the drawings and the wonderous Ben Moore Aura paint can withstand crowds of fingertips. I still need to attach the hoops for hanging and figure out the necklace part. . .
Below, this quilt, wedding present from a sister who has good taste, is part of the inspiration that sprouted these little works.

The new catalog is so wonderful. Yes, gorgeous clothes. But with snow, so much snow! and these amazing trees! Prehistoric Monkey Puzzle Trees. Such sophisticated lines and silhouette. . . really, can’t you see some owls shining amongst them?

Not sure why I hadn’t thought of this sooner. . . they are still in the works. . . for the White Whale Christmas show. . .
what do you think? dangling off thin silver chains (nice but more expensive) or from silky palest of pale shades of ribbon. . .
either way, I think they would look fabulous with a slouchy white shirt and black leggings . . . but I don’t have thighs made for leggings. . . it’ll have to be a black pencil skirt instead.

I think I mentioned yesterday that we finally met artist Kent Ambler when he stopped by our studio over the weekend. I just discovered that he has a new website (I hadn’t been on it in quite awhile) and I flipped through the new art section only to discover these fabulous woodcuts. Owl, heavens! The mockingbird, pink! CAKE! At this point I do have to wonder, I think that God created certain people, very different people, but gave them particular strains of likes. . . if you like birds, you will like bugs, if you like bugs, you will like moths, if you like moths, you will like trees, if you like trees, you will like owls, if you like owls you will like cake. Perhaps there were people made to love big things like skies and seas and mountains and perhaps there are people to love small perfectly crafted things, like dogs and birds and plants and children and cake. I can think of a few of those people right now, self-included. (though I do like mountains) (I don’t have any plans to draw any, any time soon)(but I have wanted to draw cake)
