So, in an attempt to post more regularly, especially in the midst of crazy production workloads on this graphic novel, I’m thinking I could start doing some weekly themed posts. For starters, let’s try “Black + White Wednesday” eh? Then maybe “Music Monday” perhaps…
This here’s an early stage of an etching I did way back when in school. A portrait of a visiting high school student who came to college for some kind of annual high school fine arts festival… I saw him in the hall in the art building and said, “Uh, hey, can I take a picture of you to do your portrait?” I think his name was Damien, but I can’t remember for sure, but hey, he’s Damien now. HA. Some day I’ll scan in the finished stage etching. This image is cropped quite a bit, there’s alot more to it… it’s one of Annie’s and my favorite prints.

Annie’s new zine “I Want Cake” is now available at our Etsy shop! In her own words:
A delightful little hand assembled book, or zine if you prefer, dedicated to the love of cake. I created it in honor of my friend Mollie’s recent birthday and am now making it available to the rest of the cake adoring world.
Original collages and hand lettered text, xeroxed for that endearing low-fi look, folded, tied and embellished by my very own hands. Mini garlands are all different in color so the only promise I can make is that it will look great no matter which one you get.
I swear the cut-out people were actually talking, and the text is only a faithful rendition of the conversations I happened to overhear. As I am now addicted to making these books, this is the first in a series, The Needful Indulgences. Keep your eyes peeled for the next one on the necessity of coffee.
Oh yesss, a recipe card for Chris’s favorite cake is clipped to the back of the book to facilitate the fulfilling of your now increased cake lust.
The book is in a limited edition of 25, each individually signed and hand-numbered.

Just a few more finishing touches (handmade, of course!) and Annie’s zines will be done…! My fingernails are sore from folding and creasing.

I’ve been holed-up like a hermit for the past few super-intense weeks, cranking away at this top-secret graphic novel art (I even transplanted all my studio equipment, computer, etc back at home temporarily), getting a big chunk of the book completed, and I’m really feeling like I’m getting into the groove with my process and refining the artwork… and, much to my (and Annie’s) delight, the production schedule from here on out will be alot more steady and sustainable (as in, I will have somewhat of a social life). So maybe I’ll actually be posting here on a regular basis now, ha. And as far as the art goes, the best is yet to come! Super excited about it. Who knows, they might even let me put up a sneak peek of some of the art…? Eh? Eh?
So things have been cray-zay, but I’m feeling very refreshed and clear-eyed, now that I’m over the crazy-hump and into steady-climb territory. Hooray for weird metaphors!
Teaser! Annie’s been working on a fantastic little mini-zine (Annie’s first art zine EVER!), and it’s going to be deliciously fun. Quite literally. Can’t wait to see the finished ness. It’s going to be special. She should be done with all the art tonight and will start assembling them tomorrow-ish after getting everything printed. It’s going to be just great fun. Can’t wait to post when they’re ready and get em in the shop!
