Not sure what to call it. . . “Alice Billow” ? “Wonderland Steam”? “Tea Party Rising”? I hate attaching specific words to images, but at the same time I dread that term Untitled. . .
Here are some before color photos which you probably already saw. . .
I actually like the colors I ventured to use! And red at that! Egon Schiele influenced, can you tell? The background is actually a very pale green, though here it appears to be white.
When to see Kent and Peg’s amazing house and studio. . . so amazing. A fabulous collection of folk art. Very encouraging experience overall.

This is my favorite tea cup. I love the blue ware, but I am very picky about it.
These air plant containers are genius! via I can’t remember please forgive me
Our rental walls are an ivory color, which is better than beige, but I am dying for pure smooth white walls like this house on Dos Family. Someday. But I will have one black or gray wall. And maybe a pale blue-green baby’s room. I am not pregnant.

Well, after working on this book for almost an entire year, I think I may have the tiniest bit of understanding of the sense of accomplishment, relief, and pure elation that mothers feel after birthing a child. I mean, come on, who’s pregnant for 11 months?
Kidding, kidding. But seriously, I’m so relieved and so excited to have finally accomplished the complete illustration of my very first graphic novel. I started working on the book back in Feb/March of last year, and about 130 pages of art, thousands of reference photos and videos (thank you, my awesome models), hundreds of emails and phone calls, and buh-zillions of man-hours later, the Hitherto-Top-Secret book is done and almost ready for the world. It is an absolute beast, and I, the writer, and the rest of the Battle Surgeon team cannot wait to hold the finished book in our hands.
The story and images are not for the queasy or faint of heart. You’ve been warned.
A huge thanks to everyone who has encouraged and supported me over the last year, you know who you are. We shall be having a very big party, very soon.
Starting now, I’ll be keeping you all posted regarding Battle Surgeon. For now, here are some first-look sneak peeks at some pages, minus the text, of course. We don’t want to give away too much of the mind-blowing story now, do we?

Egon Schiele, learning from his colors lately. . . pale shades of off white and greenish white with black and then rich colors in bits and patterns. Another very weird man.

Much needed organization of my accessories today, they used to live on hooks in my bedroom. But I think this is a better solution than a hanging tangle. I am dying for this floral scarf, not much of a flower on clothes person, but I think it would help to soften the edge of my black vegan leather bomber. Hint, hint Christopher. . . valentines day is only like a week away. . .
Found the purse above in a thrift store clearance bin. . . the papers I found inside were from 1970. Crazy to think no one has used this purse for forty years until now! I love all the subtleties that only vintage print matter has, even if it is receipts and bills. I also love the idea of rubbing shoe polish all over the old leather, I can almost smell it now. I promise I won’t get high.

The only green parts emerging in the yard, and they happen to be my favorite! Today the yard is a silty pool and I am sitting on the couch with a blanket and chocolate that came in a package from Switzerland. Chickadee paintings finished! Tonight I get to see my encaustic experiments hanging on the wall at Art & Light! No dinner for me tonight, I think I just ate my calorie allowance for the rest of the day in chocolate.
Loving of late, Swedish quilts on Fine Little Day and the Bauhaus exhibit everyone is talking about.

When I worked at starbucks (when Chris and I were first married several years ago) Chris’s favorite thing to take advantage of was the pumpkin bread. This one does not have lard in it though. . . (rumors about mass produced pastries). Here is the recipe I used, though I reduced the sugar to 2-1/3 cups rather than the 3 (absurd!) and added the pepitas on top and chopped candied ginger inside. . . oh yes, added vanilla. I can’t help it, I always end up meddling with recipes. The texture was very nice, and the spices perfect. And maybe the lucky babysitter will get one of those paper swaddled loaves (do you see the funny faces in the wrinkles and strings?)
So babysitter, you know who you are, eat this good bread and look at the pom-pom sleeves and feather explosions on this fav blog of mine. You will think they are weird, I know.

Stayed up late and watched LOST with the Greenes. Inevitably I woke up with a headache (I’m a wuss, I have to got to bed by 11 or my body mutinies). Lots of cups of caffeine later, a hot shower and magical blue pills and I am cured. And the day so bright and warmish! That helps.
My foresty yard has a bounty of fungus every fall, so many varieties, I really need to get a field guide. . . though I don’t eat them, only in select circumstances that involve lots of cheese. These are reference photos I used for my Alice piece. I loved seeing them again and drawing all those subtleties in their skin. I think I need to draw them more often. . .
